Bariloche is bustling and beautiful mountain tourist town, even on a rainy autumn day. There is an incredible number of things to do in the area … hiking, skiing, zip lines through the trees, boating, fishing, shopping, and a zillion other things … not that we did any of that stuff.
No, we used the day to get the heater fixed in the camper as we near-froze last night and it’s only getting colder from here, to go to the supermercado to load up on groceries as we think it may be our last chance for a week, to have a spare set of keys made, and to catch lunch in a restaurant with Wi-Fi so we could check in with the world. We did walk around the municipal area by the lake for 30 minutes – very picturesque.
We are camping on Lake Gutierrez in Nahuel Huapi National Park, which surrounds Bariloche. The drive along the lake to the campgrounds passes by a number of outstanding lake homes, and we want to stop at each one and ask for a tour.
No spillage disasters in the camper today despite driving over a thousand speed bumps in town, maybe Bobbie and I are learning how to secure our stuff.
In the map on the travel blog, San Carlos De Bariloche is in the top left blue circle in the Patagonia area.
The Trip
In April of 2009, my wife Bobbie and I did a road trip across Patagonia in a pickup truck camper; driving down the Andes on Argentina’s western highway Ruta 40, coming back east along the Straits of Magellan in Chile, and then back up Argentina’s Atlantic Coast highway Ruta 3. We camped along the way in national parks, municipal campgrounds, truck stops, and many times just alongside the road; and we stopped at every place possible, both famous and not. You can see our route of travel here.
This travel blog is a daily journal of the trip, along with a few pictures (see http://parkenbi.zenfolio.com/patagonia for more photos). The "Last Entry" below is the trip summary, but our journey actually began at a train station in Florida so you'll want to start there ... go to "We're Off".
